Non-Explosive Packages Snarl Rush Hour

Cops shut down Church Street by the Green during rush hour Monday morning as their bomb squad responded to a report of suspicious boxes.

The boxes had been left at the U.S. District Court building.

Marshals discovered the packages at 6:45 a.m., according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman.

Writing on the boxes prompted a call for assistance to the New Haven Police Department and its Hazardous Devices Unit (Bomb Squad),” Hartman reported in a press release. After police evacuated the area, HDU officers responded and determined the packages should be further investigated. X‑Rays determined the packages contained nothing hazardous or explosive.” Hartman stated that he did not know what was written on the boxes.

The street was reopened around 9:30 a.m. The U.S. Marshals Service is now leading an investigation into the incident.
