Spoiled Food Tossed After Devastating Inspection

The old Jewish Home for the Aged has a new owner, a new name — and a kitchen full of spoiled margarine, barbecue sauce and melted ice cream among a whopping total of 40 code violations, according to a decidedly unimpressed city inspector.

The inspection took place last Friday at The Advanced Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, formerly known as the Jewish Home, on Davenport Avenue.

The home failed the inspection with a score of 64 over 100. The city was so concerned it gave the home only a week, not two, to clean up its act.

The inspector’s report cited 40 specific violations in all.

City sanitarians inspect all of New Haven’s restaurants, groceries, bars, and any other establishment that serves food between one and four times a year. Establishments that score less than 80 usually have two weeks to make the recommended corrections. The health department can also close a restaurant, regardless of its score, if the sanitarians suspect an immediate danger to public health.

Attached to the inspector’s report on the center was a sheet detailing the spoiled foods that had to be destroyed immediately, which included a gallon of barbecue sauce, a bucketful of margarine, and several assorted ice creams that had been left to melt.

The inspector’s report asked the center to follow label instructions on products that state keep refrigerated.” It also demanded that the nursing home prove that it has at least two qualified food operators” — cooks who have undergone health training to safely prepare animal products — in case the main cook calls in sick.

Management at the nursing home, which a Chicago company bought late last year after the Jewish Home filed for bankruptcy, did not return several calls for comment made over two days.
