All maps are by definition mosaics, patterns of location, so there is a congruency when the medium is used as a device for finding one’s way. Think only of the ornate vestibules at New York subway stops, where arrival is celebrated by shining design. These local examples are on a smaller scale, but they share in that same exuberance of knowing one’s place.
