A sharp-eyed off-duty cop noticed two men suspicious characters on East Pearl Street. Then she saw one of them stash a gun under a parked truck, police said.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:
An off-duty officer spotted two suspicious men wearing ski masks on East Pearl Street at 10:23 p.m. on Tuesday. When she drove by them the second time, they started walking towards Grand Avenue. As they cut through a parking lot towards Clinton Avenue, police pulled up on Grand Avenue. That’s when the off-duty cop saw one of the men reach into his waistband then bend down and put something under a truck.
Police apprehended both men. They found a Ruger P90 under the truck. Both men are 19 years old.
30-Month Sentence Imposed
A 34-year-old New Haven man was sentenced on Wednesday to 30 months in federal prison for trafficking cocaine. The prison time accompanies a $5,000 fine and will be followed by three years of supervised relief.
The man had pleaded guilty in August to one count of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.

Wow—nice job! Critics always say “they are just doing their job”—not in this case. This officer wasn’t even on duty. Thanks for caring so much about this city that you did your job even when you weren’t on the payroll. I really appreciate work like this.
