Oil Spill Near Harbor Contained

Contributed photo

Fire crews contained an oil spill near New Haven Harbor to no more than 1,000 gallons Monday at Stiles and Fulton streets.

Firefighters sent in this photo and the following description of the job:

New Haven firefighters mitigated a significant leak from a gasoline tanker truck. The truck can carry 9,000 gallons of fuel. The breach was confined to the back compartment leaking an estimated 800 to 1000 gals. Crews worked with the trucking company to off load the remaining product and minimize the impact on the environment. Firefighters from Engine 5 applied foam on the spill to suppress the vapors and fire departments hazardous material team built a sand berm to contain the fuel and keep the product out of the storm drains. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and New Haven public works were also called to the scene.”
