While driving on I-91, Officer Dave Totino spotted a man pointing a handgun at him. A high-speed car chase, a discovery in a shed, and two arrests ensued.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:
On Tuesday at 6:26 p.m. Officer Totino was in Interstate 91 heading south. He was following an ambulance that was transporting a patient from Hemingway Place to the hospital. While on the highway, Totino looked in his rear view mirror and saw a man pointing a handgun at him from the passenger seat of a Honda. The officer allowed the Honda to pass and then chased after it at high speed. The pursuit ended near Quinnipiac Avenue and Aner Street, where the man jumped out and fled on foot. The 26-year-old was later caught hiding in a shed at 55 Aner St. and arrested. Police found that he was wanted for questioning in a shooting in West Haven.
The driver of the Honda, a 25-year-old woman, was also arrested. Unbeknownst to Totino, her two minor sons had been in the backseat of the car during the entire chase. The children were examined by EMTs and released to their aunt.
No one was injured and no vehicles were damaged during the incident. The handgun was tossed out of the Honda on Aner Street, where police were searching for it.
In other police news, according to Avery:
There was a gun complaint near the corner of Whalley Avenue and the Boulevard on Tuesday at 9:10 p.m. An anonymous caller told police there were several young males near the corner and one of them had a gun. When police arrived, several males fled north on Boulevard towards Goffe. after a foot pursuit, police caught a 21-year-old convicted felon who was in possession of a Ruger .44 Magnum revolver.
Three teenage boys stole a gray mountain bike from a 60-year-old man on Tuesday night. At 8:32 p.m., the victim was riding his bike on Shelton Avenue near Thompson Street when he was approached by the three teens. One of them pointed a gun at the man and demanded money. The man didn’t have any money, so they took his bike.
Bank Robbery Suspect Indicted
A grand jury on Tuesday charged a woman with robbing the Amity Road Bank of America. The 42-year-old woman allegedly stole $4,858. Police caught up to her in a bathroom at the Best Way Inn on Pond Lily Avenue. She faces a fine of up to $250,000 and up to 20 years in prison.
