The New Haven Police Athletic League fielded its first co-ed wrestling team this season and came up from the mat with success.

The team of 15 wrestlers — 11 boys and 4 girls — has been practicing twice a week for the past five months, according to Sgt. Elisa Tuozzoli, who serves as one of the coaches along with Sgt. Elliott Rosa and Detective Ryan McFarland. The last practice was held Tuesday afternoon.

The wrestlers are between 8‑years-old an 13, and for the 2015 – 2016 season, have managed to rack up four gold, three silver and 15 bronze medals from their Sunday competitions. Three wrestlers — one girl and two boys — have qualified for the statewide wrestling tournament.

Throughout the five-months of training and competition during this first season, every wrestler’s determination, perseverance, and hard work has been outstanding,” Tuozzoli said in an email. The coaches have also played a tremendous role in the program’s success. In addition, parents, grandparents and guardians have helped the program tremendously by supporting the wrestlers and transporting them to practices and tournaments.

The New Haven Police Department is very proud or our wrestlers and the success of their first season,” she added. New Haven PAL looks forward to growing its wrestling program and the continued success of our wrestlers in the years to come.”
