Police are seeking the public’s help in finding a driver who fled the scene after striking a pedestrian.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Prospect and Trumbull streets Tuesday night around 7:45.
A 28-year-old woman was crossing Trumbull, in the crosswalk, when the driver of a dark-colored vehicle struck her, then drove away, according to police spokesperson Officer Scott Shumway.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Shumway reported in a release issued Wednesday morning.
He asked anyone witnesses who have not yet spoken with police to contact the department at 203 – 946-6316.
According to a communication sent by the city’s emergency management department, a witness reported that the pedestrian had the green crosswalk signal and that she was running at the time she was hit.
“The pedestrian was alert and conscious on scene but suffered from an apparent arm injury. Officers are actively attempting to obtain video surveillance. At this time, it appears the vehicle is at fault for the accident,” the communication stated.
The Prospect/Trumbull bridge was designed as a pedestrian death trap in order to accommodate higher traffic and truck volumes. Look at how narrow those sidewalks are and how much room is provided for vehicles to drive/turn through at high speeds. The road and sidewalks can even ice over in winter which makes things even worse.
I would hope that if the city designs another intersection like this in the future, it will look at international/national best practices, instead of using whatever truck stop design manual they used for this. The design of this bridge is totally unacceptable for a city environment.
I hope the pedestrian makes a speedy and complete recovery, but injuries like these are often ignored kind of like how we don't like to talk about Long COVID. Even when people survive the event, the injuries can easily have lifelong consequences.
