Winter Sun Worshippers Flock To The Quinnipiac

Allan Appel Photo

It wasn’t just humans reveling in the sunny aftermath of the storm on Sunday morning.

As the sun rose over the Quinnipiac River, flights of sparrows hopped onto the bare branches of riverine hedges to warm themselves.

They turned their shaggy winter-fat chests toward the sun and occasionally pecked at bare twigs to find a snack.

According to the bird books, there are more than 400 species of sparrows, perching birds with amazingly strong feet. Some are white-chinned, or black-headed, or parrot-beaked, and it’s hard to tell subtle differences among them or other seed-eating and perching birds.

These Sunday morning sunbathers looked to be house sparrows flocking down from wherever their winter nests are to enjoy, as we are doing, the sunny coda to the weekend blizzard.
