Transit Czar Moves Up

After ushering in a new era to the city’s transportation department, Mike Piscitelli is moving on to the city’s economic development wing.

That news was announced in a Friday afternoon press release from city spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga.

Piscitelli (pictured) is currently the head of the city’s Department of Transportation, Traffic, and Parking. He took over a department that was focused on cars — traffic and parking” — and expanded its focus to include pedestrians, trains and bikes.

He’ll now move up to become the deputy economic development administrator, filling a position that has been vacant since Chrissy Bonnano left it earlier this year.

Jim Travers, now the deputy head of traffic and parking, will assume the role of acting director of that department. He will receive an annual salary of $89,755, which takes into account the fact that he will temporarily be doing two jobs, as deputy and acting director, Mayorga said.

Piscitelli is joining the Economic Development Administration, which comprises several departments and 120 employees. Those departments are City Plan, the Livable City Initiative, Building, Cultural Affairs, Economic Development, the Commission on Equal Opportunities, and Transportation.

Piscitelli will earn $99,958 a year. Both he and Travers will start their new jobs on Monday.

Under development head Kelly Murphy, Piscitelli will assume various coordinating responsibilities for projects across the six departments,” Mayorga wrote. This position’s responsibilities are particularly important as the City continues its strong economic growth with $2+ billion in construction.” Among ongoing and upcoming economic development projects, Mayorga mentioned Downtown Crossing, transit oriented development at Union Station”, Winchester Factory, and various housing development projects in construction and soon to be underway.”

Mayorga offered this outline of Piscitelli’s resume: Prior to leading the Transportation Department, Piscitelli served the New Haven City Plan Department for six years, Metro-North Railroad and the City of Springfield. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from St. Bonaventure University and a Master’s Degree in Regional Planning from the University of Massachusetts.”

On Travers (pictured), she wrote: Jim Travers has served for two years in Transportation and 25 years of progressively responsible experience directing operations in local non-profit organizations as well as corporate structures. His background in business and now in public administration is well-suited to his new role, as the City is rolling out a dynamic parking management program.”

The city will shortly begin a search for permanent transportation director, Mayorga said.
