Police are investigating the 14th homicide of the year: a man shot early Sunday morning in a lot on Lilac Street in Newhallville.
Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:
Officers responded to Winchester Avenue on Sunday morning at 1:30 a.m. after a report of shots fired. They found a man collapsed in a parking lot at 660 Winchester Ave. The man, later identified as Marquise Baskin, was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the Hospital of St. Raphael, where he succumbed to his wounds on Monday.
He is the son of New Haven firefighter Jeff Baskin.
The death comes less than a month after the 13th homicide of the year. The running total of 2010 homicides has now surpassed the total for all of 2009.
Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to call the Major Crime Unit at 203-946-6304 or the Anonymous Tipline at 203-946-6296.
In other police news, according to Avery:
Police responded to 27 Mead St. in the West River neighborhood on a report of an unresponsive 10-month-old baby. The baby was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he died. Police said foul play was not suspected.
“Feet” Gets 21 Years
The Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday that Mauriel “Feet” Glover of Ivy Street was sentenced to 21 years in jail and 10 years of supervised release for leading a New Haven-based crack cocaine trafficking ring.
The sentence stems from “Operation No Nonsense,” an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in cooperation with the New Haven and West Haven police departments. The joint task force began investigating crack distribution in Newhallville in 2004 and found that a New Haven transportation network was weekly transporting large quantities of cocaine from New York, processing the cocaine into crack, packaging it, then selling it throughout the area.
Glover was allegedly a leader of the trafficking operation. The DEA made undercover purchases of crack from him in 2006 and 2007. The DEA tapped his phone and recorded hundreds of incriminating phone conversations.
Glover was arrested on Dec. 11, 2007. In January, 2008, a federal grand jury indicted Glover and 16 others for their alleged involvement in the trafficking. On May 21, 2008, Glover pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of crack.

HOW SAD IT IS THAT DAILY THERE IS EITHER A SHOOTING,AT LEAST ONE, OR A MURDER. THE ONLY RESPONSE FROM THE CITY ADMINISTRATION IS TO BLAME THE CITIZENS BLAME THE STATE BLAME THE FEDS. WHEN IS THE CITY AND THE POLICE GOING TO MAKE A TRUE EFFORT TO BOTH SOLVE SOME OF THESE INCIDENTS OR DO SOMETHING TO CUT THE VIOLENCE. IS THERE ANYONE IN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT FROM THE HIGHLY TOUTED MIDWEST BRAIN TRUST TO OFFICERS THEMSELVES INTERESTED IN STOPPING THE VIOLENCE AND SOLVING SOME CRIME. IS IT JUST MAKE CASH AND RUN OUT OF THE CITY??
AND WHAT HAPPENED TO LIMONS NIXLE NOTIFICATION SYSTEM ,, PASSING IDEA
