Police are looking for a man who shot a 27-year-old man to death in Fair Haven early Tuesday.
The killing occurred between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Atwater Street. Police said the victim, Reuben Gonzalez, 27, had just returned to New Haven after finishing a shift at his job in Newington. He was dropping his cousin at his house on Atwater when three men approached the car.
The men ordered Gonzalez and a passenger out of the car and onto the ground, then stole money and a cell phone from the vehicle.
The three assailants started fleeing when Gonzalez made a remark to them. One assailant turned around and fired two to four shots at them, hitting Gonzalez. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
“The victim was not a player,” said Assistant Chief Archie Generoso Tuesday morning. “This was a robbery.”
Police have a description of the shooter and are canvassing the neighborhood.
