Police are looking for a man who shot a 27-year-old man to death in Fair Haven early Tuesday.

The killing occurred between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Atwater Street. Police said the victim, Reuben Gonzalez, 27, had just returned to New Haven after finishing a shift at his job in Newington. He was dropping his cousin at his house on Atwater when three men approached the car.

The men ordered Gonzalez and a passenger out of the car and onto the ground, then stole money and a cell phone from the vehicle.

The three assailants started fleeing when Gonzalez made a remark to them. One assailant turned around and fired two to four shots at them, hitting Gonzalez. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

“The victim was not a player,” said Assistant Chief Archie Generoso Tuesday morning. “This was a robbery.”

Police have a description of the shooter and are canvassing the neighborhood.

Being that I live in the area I agree they should release the description. It would help keep us safe and get this individual behind bars.

So happy that this is my last month living in Fair Haven.  So sad to leave this comfort zone after so many years.  The streets are getting bad in Fair Haven.
