Rent Rebates Available

Starting Tuesday, elderly or disabled renters with low incomes can apply to receive rebates for rent paid in 2013.

The mayor’s office made that announcement Monday.

This program provides invaluable assistance to those in our community who have the greatest need and I encourage all those who think they might be eligible to submit an application for this modest rebate,” Mayor Toni Harp said in a release. Eligible residents should call one of the city’s three senior centers to schedule an appointment for filing an application.”

People can apply starting Tuesday, April 15.

Eligible residents must be 65 years old as of December 23, 2013 or be deemed totally disabled by the federal Social Security Administration (SSA),” according to the release. Furthermore, eligible renters must have income below $41,600 for a married couple and $34,100 for single people.”

The rebates are available through the Social Security Administration (SSA). Seniors can create their own MySocialSecrity account here. For more information, call the SSA at 1 – 800-772‑1213.
