Press Impresses Health Dept.; SCSU Doesn’t

City health inspectors gave high marks to the restaurant Press on State Street. Southern Connecticut State University and two outlets didn’t do as well on their exams; one market had to hold off on anymore cooking until it could get rid of the grease build-up and rodent-catching bait.
These were some of the highest and lowest scoring New Haven establishments during the city’s routine restaurant inspections.
Sanitarians at the Environmental Health Department inspect all of New Haven’s restaurants once a year. Restaurants with a score of less than 80 have about two weeks to make the recommended corrections. The department can also close a restaurant, regardless of score, if they see an immediate danger to public health.
Some trends from this round of inspections include a lack of toilet paper and paper towels, dirty walk-in freezers and floors that need some repairing.
Below are the latest scores for a handful of sit-down restaurants, luncheonettes, local markets, ice cream shops and college dining options. They were inspected during the last week of January.
