Riverfest Draws Hundreds

This report was sent in by Fair Havener Carlos Galo.

Several hundred people from New Haven and beyond descended on the banks of the Quinnipiac River estuary on Sunday for the 6th annual Quinnipiac Riverfest planned by the Chatham Square Neighborhood Association.

The festival, which has quickly become a rite of Spring in New Haven, coincides with the traditional opening of the boating season at the Quinnipiac River Marina at 307 – 309 Front St — the same marina that until recently housed the 100-plus year-old oyster barge that has now made its way to the banks of the East River in Brooklyn.

The community-planned event, organized by a team of Fair Haven neighbors, included $5 canoe rides, guided by the Quinnipiac River Watershed Association…

There were rocking performances by three local bands, including Goodnight Blue Moon (pictured), some of whose members live in the neighborhood…

A New Haven Fire Department Fire Rescue boat docked for the afternoon at the marina — a big hit with kids and adults alike.

People enjoyed the clear blue skies and warm sun after a brutal winter this year…

Festival goers, including Mayor Toni Harp, walked, drove, and rode their bikes to the cyclist-friendly event which was on this year’s New Haven bike month calendar.
