Thieves Make Off With Big Bucks

A burglar (or burglars) made off with over $21,000 worth of jewelry, and a robber swiped $4,300 from a man outside a Dunkin’ Donuts.

The separate incidents occurred Monday, prompting police investigations.

Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman:

Someone broke into a locked first-floor apartment on Lawrence Street in East Rock some time during the day Monday. A tenant came home to find the bedroom in disarray” and all that jewelry gone.

The burglar(s) may have broken in through a ground floor window. The fan that was fitted in it was on the floor. The front door also could have had its lock defeated and could have been the crook’s point of entry. Another possibility, a prior tenant or even the landlord – described by the renters as Sketchy”. But they said they didn’t really suspect him,” Hartman wrote in a release.

The second incident occurred in the early evening in the DD lot at Grand and Ferry in Fair Haven.

A 27-year-old man had gone into a nearby McDonald’s to buy milkshakes for him and mother,” then returned to his mother’s car, when a man approached his open window.”

The short, clean-shaven man asked for heroin.

What? I don’t know you?” the 27-year-old man replied.

At which point the short, clean shaven-man reached into the car and grabbed a wallet on the 27-year-old’s lap, then fled. The victim guesses the robber spotted all that cash in the wallet when the victim took it out to pay the cashier at McDonald’s.

The victim told police he had all that cash on him to buy a car. Cops interviewed a car dealer, who verified the story.
