Cop Hurt In Crash

A driver ran a red light on downtown’s High Street and slammed into a cop cruiser late Thursday night.

Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Dave Hartman:

The collision took place at 11:55 p.m. Thursday. Officer Steven McMorris was driving a marked cop car on Chapel Street when a 55-year-old person drove a car through a red light on High Street, striking McMorris’s car.

Yale cops rolled back surveillance videotape and confirmed the civilian had blown through the light. The officer was treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital for minor injuries and released. The offending driver was cited for failure to obey a traffic signal. Both cars were so damaged they had to be towed from the scene.

2 Men Shot

Police got a report from the Shot-spotter system of gunfire near Newhall and Read streets in Newhallville at 12:04 p.m. Thursday. About 25 minutes later, a 35-year-old man walked into the emergency department at Yale-New Haven Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. He told police he had been outside a package store at that intersection when a masked man shot him in the leg.

A 21-year-old man was shot in the knee during a fight outside 88 Kensington St. at 2:10 a.m. Friday. The victim told police that several women had been fighting there. As the fight progressed, some men became involved and a gunshot rang out.” The victim hitched a right part-way to the hospital, then walked the rest of the way. A vehicle at the scene was hit by a bullet, too.

Robbery

A 42-year-old man reported being robbed at gunpoint by three masked males as he walked through Farnam Court public housing complex on Grand Avenue at 12:27 a.m. Friday. The victim handed over his wallet, and was hit over the head by a gun. He suffered a minor head injury.
