Sanctuary Lamp Thief Invited To Worship

Contributed Photo

Father Michael F. Ray sent in the following write-up about a cash reward for the return of a sanctuary lamp stolen from St. Thomas’s Church

Cash Reward and No Questions Asked is offered for the return of the Sanctuary Lamp. It was taken from St. Thomas’s Church, 830 Whitney Ave. in New Haven. Please call 203 – 777-7623 to make arrangements.

Staff members discovered the theft this weekend, and the congregation arrived on Sunday to find a glaring emptiness where the lamp had hung for so many decades. The spiritual value to the congregation and the donor’s family (a memorial to lovedones) far outweighs its monetary worth.

The sermon on Sunday just happened to touch on the theme of raising our vision to truly see and affirm the dignity of all who are in need; the worship of the congregation was supported by prayers for the thief — that the theft would truly address their needs and that this was not just a random act of senseless vandalism.

St. Thomas’s is a congregation that works to recognize what is of true spiritual value, the gathering of God’s people around the altar for Eucharist, and not the religious items used in worship. Whoever removed the lamp is encouraged to join us for worship at 10 a.m. Sunday mornings. Come and see.
