Scholarship Fund Grants $230,000 To 230 Teens

The following was submitted by the New Haven Scholarship Fund.

On Sunday, June 11th , the New Haven Scholarship Fund held a ceremony at the United Church on the Green to award over $270,000 to 230 New Haven Public High School seniors. These students have been accepted into colleges and universities throughout the country. This represents enormous growth from the eight $100 scholarships awarded 58 years ago by the founder, Hillhouse math teacher, Jean Lovell. The original scholarships enabled students to pay all of their tuition for a year at SCSU. My have times changed!

During the ceremony two special honors were noted. The New Haven Scholarship Fund was very fortunate to receive a donation from the family of former Mayor Bart Guida for $55,000. This gift will ensure that his devotion to his beloved city will continue far into the future. Also during the ceremony Margret Shey Whatley, an educator who taught kindergarten at Winchester School for more than 31 years, was recognized for her continued support. Not only has she served on the Board since 1972 but she has also participated in many civic and educational organizations within the community.

This year’s recipients received their awards from Mayor Toni Harp, Interim Superintendent Reginald Mayo and President of the Scholarship Fund Jeffrey Alpert. All were proud to personally congratulate each recipient for their well-deserved award. Both the Mayor and the Interim Superintendent spoke to the students. Their message of staying focused, giving back to the community that supported them and being active in shaping the future of their community was well received. They also urged students to share their appreciation to all those who supported them and to not be afraid to continue reaching out for support as needed as they pursue their higher education degrees. That support is crucial for their promised success.

The New Haven Scholarship Fund is a non-profit organization. It is managed by an all volunteer Executive Committee and Board, so every dollar donated to the organization is given to New Haven Students in Scholarship Awards. For information about the New Haven Scholarship Fund visit the Website: www.newhavenscholarshipfund.org.
