She Overcame The Voices

Claire Bien survived two breakdowns and years of hearing hostile voices in her head — and has produced a book intended to show other people that they can, too.

As many as 10 percent of people struggle with hearing voices that impede their lives, Bien, a writer and advocate who has lived and worked here for decades, said on an episode of WNHH radio’s Dateline New Haven” program.

She appeared on the show to promote her new book, called Hearing Voices, Living Fully: Living with the voices in my head. She is scheduled to speak about the book at Silk Road Art Gallery, 83 Audubon St., this Saturday, Sept. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Bien’s book traces, in her own words as well as those of her ex-husband, how she came to grips with the voices, underwent hospitalizations, and rebuilt her life. She now works through a group called the Hearing Voices Network to help others with similar challenges.
