Shulamith Chernoff of Westville, associate professor of education emeritus at Southern Connecticut State University, has discovered a new career long past the time many other people have retired. She has become an award-winning poet. Click here to watch her read aloud a poem—from her new published collection, The Stones Bear Witness (Hanover Press)—about turning 80.

Shula Chernoff is one of New Haven’s great treasures.  Her time at Southern Connecticut State University was spent encouraging and teaching young teachers (yes, I am one of them, though I am no longer young!) with her infinite wisdom, patience and insight.  It is completely lovely to hear her reading her poetry, this particular one is moving and vivid. I sent it along to my own 18-year-old poet who is studying creative writing at Oberlin… Shula is one of my longtime heroes.
