A sinkhole caused officials to close the intersection of Crown and College Streets mid-morning Monday.
A water main burst, leading to the collapse of a manhole, according a government transportation department worker on the scene.
At first traffic tie-ups were reported. Then the intersection was blocked off and traffic diverted.
The Regional Water Authority took charge of the scene. An official present said it plans to shut down the water line for the construction site of a $50 million apartment complex at College and Crown, across from Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School. At that point the crew can pinpoint where exactly the leak is from—and whether a “simple fix” or a dig is required.
Update:
Kate Powell, communications manager for the Regional Water Authority, gave an update on the progress Tuesday morning: “At this point, the leaking water service has been repaired. AT&T has hired a construction firm to secure the road around the manhole. At some point AT&T will proceed with their contractor to make permanent repairs.”
