in%20the%20cipher.jpgA poetry slam within a play proves skin deep at the Yale Cabaret.

The show is called In The Cipher: A Poetry Slam. And it’s all about skin—skin color. (Shows start at 8:30 and 11 Friday and Saturday nights. Click here for details on reservations.)

You’re never quite sure where you are for the hour-long performance of recitals and sketches and audience interaction: a conventional poetry slam modified for small theater? A subway? A cabaret? The dislocation is part of the point, of course. And you’re glad you’re there, even when it hurts. Sample one: Host (and Cabaret regular) Brian Henry, with Nondumiso Tembe. Click on the play arrow to watch. Sample two: Click on the play arrow to watch Ashley Bryant as an Army brat turned waitress, who takes the mic to recite “I Didn’t Know.” Sample three: Teresa Lim. (Jonathan Davenport is on bass.) Click on the play arrow.
