Alderman “Not-So-Smart” Thanks Police

A week after his brush with a burglar, Alderman Michael Smart publicly recognized the police officers who helped capture the alleged thief.
In a ceremony in the aldermanic chamber at City Hall, Smart (second from right in photo) doled out official citations from the Board of Aldermen to 11 city cops, the ones who caught and arrested the man who allegedly broke into the Wooster Square alderman’s house on July 24. The honors were bestowed at the beginning of the regular meeting of the Board of Aldermen.
Standing at the podium, East Shore Alderman Al Paolillo (at right in photo) told the story of what happened that night: Smart came home to his house to find someone was inside. He immediately called the police. Smart entered the house, then “chased and tracked the gun-toting perpetrator” through the neighborhood. The burglar three times turned his gun on Smart and told him to stop following him, or else. Smart ended his pursuit, then into a patrol car and helped guide the cops to the burglar.
The next day, Paolillo saw Smart in church and he “kept coming back” to the professionalism and compassion the police had shown. Monday’s ceremony was an opportunity to recognize that.
Hill Alderwoman Andrea Jackson-Brooks said she wasn’t sure it was such a great idea for Alderman Smart to chase after the alleged burglar. She jokingly referred to him as Alderman “Not-so-Smart,” as she read aloud a citation. The certificates include Smart’s first-person account of the events of July 24 and his praise for the officers involved. “Your quick thinking and fine police work saved the day and save me,” he wrote.
Smart handed out the eleven citations, including one to Lt. Rebecca Sweeney (pictured in top photo), the top cop in the Downtown-Wooster Square policing district, praising her leadership.
The other officers honored were: Det. Bertram Etienne, Det. Craig Dixon, Sgt. Dennis Burgh, and Officers Dave Hartman, Roger Kergaravat, Scott Durkin, Martin Feliciano, Darryl Cargill, Armondo Vale, and Thomas Benedetto.
“This is a good day for us,” said Chief Frank Limon.

Nice story.
In other news, the officer at left in the lower photo nearly ran my dog over yesterday as he blew through an intersection that we were in the middle of crossing. After seeing my “wtf?!” gesture in his rearview mirror, he returned to the scene (burning rubber as he drove around the block) and then spent 15 minutes berating me about how he has the right to drive that way as he was on his way to an important call. Must not have been that important.

THERE WAS NO GUN…Therefore, how is this indivdual described as “gun-toting”? Furthermore, incidents like this occur on a regular basis in the city. How come Officers only receive Kudos when an alderman is a victim????

mike smart is a class act but with this being said the good police work goes on in newhallville, dixwell and the hill every week guns are recovered and not a peep from any one. The chief needs to stop playing politics and run the police department.

Congratulations to all our police officers who do there job in a most professional manner…still waiting to hear about the I.D. of the person who put the gun in Alderman Smart’s face and threatened him three times…Why hasn’t he been identified?

This is for the comment made by Motherof2—-what is so embarrassing about having 11 officers in the area of wooster? On the contrary you should be thankful that there was such an amount of police presence. This second part is for the comment posted by HUH—- the same goes for you. How could you be so sure that there was NO GUN. You people need to be thankful that the job is being done by the officers that are putting their lives at risk every minute to protect the citizens of New Haven. I thank every officer that is out there protecting us and pray that they are keep safe.
