Smash! Now Smile

Some knuckleheads brought a video camera to capture some overnight downtown glass-smashing — and did not appear to notice that other cameras were turned on them as well.

The episode occurred shortly before 3 a.m. on Nov. 7. Three young men were walking on Chapel Street. One had a video camera, with the light on rolling. Another was kicking glass.

They happened to walk by what may be the most overtly video-surveilled block in the area: 900 Chapel St., where the cops and Town Green Special Services District have a storefront substation. Look in the windows and you’ll see multiple screens that serve as a public service announcement: Your actions are being watched. And recorded.

The young man’s kick succeeded in shattering the glass in the revolving door at the entrance to the building’s main lobby. He connected again with the glass in front of the police substation, though he didn’t succeed in shattering it. Click on the video above to watch.

The video ends as the trio headed east — in the direction where, around the same time, someone smashed windows of cars parked on Center Street.

Sgt. Manmeet Colon, head of the police department’s robbery and burglary unit, said the same person is suspected of having smashed the car windows, too. She asked anyone who recognizes the figures in the video or otherwise has information about the incident to contact detectives at (203) 946‑6304.
