Still In Coma, Cop Leaves Hospital

Gonzalez%2CDiane.jpgNearly two months after she was gravely hurt in an on-duty car crash that killed a fellow cop, Police Officer Diane Gonzalez has been transferred from Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Gonzalez and Sgt. Dario Scott” Aponte were responding to a 911 call on Sept. 9 when their cruisers collided. Aponte died. Gonzalez was left in a coma. She left the hospital Tuesday morning, according to hospital officials.

She wasn’t released because she’s doing well,” however, said Police Chief James Lewis. Gonzalez remains on life support, in a coma. Her family has moved her to a rehab facility down south, Lewis said. Gonzalez was put on a plane Tuesday morning at Tweed-New Haven Airport and flown to Atlanta, Georgia, he said.

Everyone here is still wishing her the best,” said Lewis, but she’s got a long, tough road ahead.”

Her family announced the move Tuesday.

Diane will begin a journey of rehabilitation,” read a note released through hospital staff.

The Gonzalez family would like to thank you for your prayers, get well cards, flowers, food, kind words and all your wonderful expressions of concern,” the message read. Please continue to keep Diane in your prayers. Once again, a heart-felt thanks to all.”
