Stop Playing Around”

The owner of Mary’s Sweets thought a man was playing a joke when he walked into her Court Street shop at 12:30 p.m. Saturday wearing a mask and demanding money.

Stop playing around,” she told him. She asked him to uncover his face.

Instead, he walked behind the counter and helped himself to the cash,” reported police spokesman Officer David Hartman.

The man fled on Court Street; she ran after him but couldn’t catch him. Hartman stated that detectives are hoping surveillance video will help in identifying the man.”

Around a half hour earlier, according to Hartman, a New Haven woman in her early 30s asked friend to drop her off at Ella Grasso Boulevard, then walked into the Evergreen Cemetery, where she jumped into the pond.

One of her friends called police, who responded.

A sergeant gave her two commands to come out of the water. She obeyed the second,” Hartman reported in a release Monday. EMTs took the woman to Yale-New Haven Hospital where a psychiatric evaluation has been ordered. Hospital staff say she wasn’t harmed by her short time in the frigid water. The woman gave no reason for her action.”
