Stop Work Order Issued; 2 Buildings Condemned

A day after the emergency demolition of an historic downtown building, city inspectors acted to prevent collapses at three other properties.

City Building Official Jim Turcio issued a stop work order Tuesday afternoon for the rear of a Temple Street space near the corner of Chapel Street, where a space for a new pizzeria called Ah Beetz (get it?) is being created.

Workers were still framing the front section of the restaurant. Turcio issued the order after an inspector saw workers using a torch to cut a structural steel beam. He said it was the second order he’d issued for the project; months ago work had begun without a permit, he said.

On Congress Avenue in the Hill, Turcio’s crew ordered an empty garage — set back in the middle of the block — demolished after the roof collapsed. The garage belongs to Quality Plumbing Supply on the other side of the block, fronting Davenport Avenue. Owner Herb Mantelker said he had previously used the garage for storage until business dipped. No one was hurt when the roof collapsed, he said. The business has been around since 1946.

And Turcio gave the owner of the shell of a former Kimberly Avenue store, next to Dairy Queen, to fence in and repair or tear down the strucutre. The city had previously condemned the structure, at which point the owner made repairs, Turcio said. But he checked back on the building Saturday and noticed walls starting to buckle again.
