Street Dogs Still On the Loose

A 45-year-old woman from Fair Haven was walking with a male friend on Clay Street at 12:43 a.m. Wednesday when they were approached by three unknown men with a gun. As the woman fled, she looked back and saw her friend being assaulted by the men. Police arrested one of three suspects in the assault, a 22-year-old man also from Fair Haven.

Read on for more crime details, according to police spokeswoman Bonnie Winchester.

The Casa Nostra restaurant at 232 Wooster St. reported burglars forced their rear door open overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

And after 10 hours, a battery of law officials, with the Trooper One helicopter circling the skies, gave up a search for feral dogs that have hunkered down in the razed Rockview Circle housing projects in West Rock. One dog, believed to be the one which mauled a woman last week in Beaver Hills, was tranquilized but slipped away before the drugs set in. The six or seven street dogs, one of which has been attacking residents, have established underground lairs and hiding spots in the area, say police. One of the dogs is an Akita, a pretty, easily house-trained Japanese pooch, believed to be an abandoned pet.

After Tuesday’s resource-intensive search, police will no longer actively search for the dogs, said Winchester. Anyone who sees a suspicious-looking canine is encouraged to call 946-6316.
