The Bicycle Thief, Take 2

He crept into a courtyard as the city slept. He tugged at chains, tires, locks. He made off into the night with a bike plus two bike wheels. Now people are wondering: Who was that video star?

The police, specifically, are wondering that question. Maybe you can help them out.

The photo at left is a still from a video taken by a security camera at a downtown residential tower. It captured a bolt-cutter-toting thief spending 12 minutes hacking away at locked bicycles in the tower’s courtyard beginning at 3:52 a.m. on Oct. 5.

Yale and downtown city police have investigated the case. They haven’t found the perpetrator yet. They’re asking the public’s help.

The Independent originally posted the video last week. Readers commented that the grainy, jerky, sped-up video presented in the story didn’t give them a good enough look at the man.

So since then Sgt. Brian Donnelly of the Yale police has sent along some enhanced stills, to offer a better look.

If you have any clues or other information to share about the case, call detectives at 203 – 946-6304 or email top downtown cop Sgt. Tammi Means .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

And click on the video if you’d like to watch the thief at work, most of the time thwarted by Krptonite U‑locks.
