The Challenge of 2006

Look for youth to be New Haven’s political buzzword in 2006. After a spike in violence by teens, City Hall got the message that New Haven needs to work more productively with kids. Mayor John DeStefano said this week that he plans to roll out the highlights of a new comprehensive youth policy in his inaugural address Jan. 1 at Celentano School. Just four months ago, the mayor said the city didn’t need such a policy. Then the issue surfaced in elections, caught on in the community, and he responded. Plus, he’s running for governor this coming year; he can’t afford to have crime continue to worsen in his home city after so many years of improvement.
