The New Haven Firebird Society and Beulah Heights First Pentecostal Church are sponsoring a black history theater workshop series for the last two Saturdays in February.
The workshop is being lead by theatre artist and historian Karima Robinson. Open to young people ages 12 to 21, the workshop is designed to explore African American history. Participants will create an original performance piece based on history and their own lived experiences.
Robinson said that the premise of the workshop is to help young people learn more about black history beyond what they may glean about civil rights leaders through theatre.
“Films like Selma help in educating this generation of youth,” she said in an email. “But our history is so vast and rich that myself, the New Haven Firebirds, and Beulah Heights have come together to do our part. Theatre exercises are used to make [learning] fun and keep the youth engaged.”
The workshops are being held at Beulah Heights, 806 Orchard St., and are free. But the number of participants that can be accommodated is limited to 30. The workshops will be held Feb. 21 and Feb. 28.
