This Day In New Haven History: Inebriates Spotted On The Green

It was bad enough that Patrick Fox was drunk and out of control on the Green. It was worse that his buddy, John Hunt, also interfered when the cops showed up to arrest Fox.

Maybe there was a reason for this disorderly conduct, which unfolded on the New Haven Green one dusky night in 1864. The Civil War was raging, and upstanding young men in New Haven were assembling to train as new recruits in the Union Army. Is it possible that Fox had one or two for the road before he signed up or joined other army volunteers and just got carried away? Is that what he explained to the arresting cop, one Officer Darrow?

We can’t offer you a body camera account of the moment. But if If you want to travel back in time to examine how an arrest was made then, we can offer you a history cam. To use it, click on the audio above or find it in iTunes or any podcast app.
