Tomlinson Bridge Claims Another

When a hundred cyclists joined the monthly Critical Mass bike ride Friday, they made a point of crossing a perilous bridge where cyclists get thrown from their bikes while trying to cross railroad tracks.

The point was to spread the word about how to cross the Tomlinson Bridge safely. The ride came amid disappointment that the state has failed to address a major safety concern. State workers studied the area and put up one warning sign.

“Be very careful crossing the road!” called out cyclist Mark Abraham.

Despite the calls for caution, one cyclist still went down.

Jason Stockmann caught the crash on video camera — click on the play arrow to watch his clip.

Right, Brakes. With several hundred cyclists crossing this bridge on any given day, that only gives you the potential of having a few dozen very serious injuries (if not fatalities) per year.

Which is exactly what has been documented consistently, on an annual basis, since the new bridge opened.
