Charles Kim, one of three city cops arrested for allegedly firing their guns into the air after a night of drinking at Christopher Martin’s on Upper State Street, has quit the force.
Kim (pictured above) submitted his one-sentence resignation letter this past Friday to Chief Dean Esserman.
Kim and the other two officers, Lawrence Burns and Krzystof Ruszczyk, were classmates at the police academy. They are facing criminal charges in connection with the April 1, 2012, incident outside Christopher Martin’s. They pleaded not guilty.
The Board of Police Commissioners last year fired Officer Burns, who allegedly lied about the incident when questioned by a supervisor.

I’m a little disappointed that the ex-officer Kim would be considered for a diversionary program simply because he quit before being fired. I’m not certain what to make of Esserman’s statement because of how its written. Was he offering diversionary programs as a carrot to get the officers to quit, or telling the state’s attorney that he wants them to face prison time. This appears to be a bit of boys in blue protecting each other. In that regard, I’m a little disappointed.
