Tweed Tower Closure Delayed

Planes landing at Tweed-New Haven Airport will get the guidance of air traffic controllers for two more months, after a decision Friday by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The FAA had been planning to close Tweed’s air traffic control tower on May 5 due to the federal sequester—automatic budget cuts triggered by gridlock in Washington.
Local politicians and business leaders fought the closure. The FAA has pushed back the closure date to June 15, the Connecticut delegation announced Friday in a press release.
“The decision to close air traffic control towers was misguided and unnecessary and we will continue to push for every opportunity to reverse this harmful action,” the press release reads. “These closures will put at risk not only public safety, but also our local economies that rely on these airports for jobs and tax revenue. We hope this delay will allow the FAA time to reconsider its decision, and we’ll continue to work to make sure they do.”

Please, besides an occasional YNH Hospital patient from Saudi Arabia -What local economy relies on Tweed?
And, tax revenue FROM Tweed?!?! Taxpayers subsidize that rich man’s playground, what revenues does it produce? It is a joke and should stand on it’s own or be allowed to fail, period.
Given that Connecticut subsides the rest of the country, wouldn’t we be better off if even more cuts were made, and we picked up the cost of the (apparently uunnecessary tower?
Calling the airport a rich man’s playground is nonsense.The almost 40,000 who use the Usairways service every year are from every walk of life and income level.
Up until 2009, the airport was strangled in its attempt to improve its infrastructure and therefore runway obstructions grew to the point that most of the airliners flown by the major airlines could not operate from tweeds runway.
Had the airport been able to improve over the last few decades, the level of service today would be quite different with service to several hub airports giving area travelers more options and destinations.
Better late than never and the last 3 years has seen more improvements than in the last 40 years. Runway overruns added to both ends of the main runway, trees removed from the runway flight path,the runway resurfaced and the taxiway extended to the end of the runway.
The sluggish economy and high fuel prices have caused airlines to contain growth, but soon there will be more service at tweed as the runway will be maximized to receive airliners that can operate off tweeds runways.
