Violence-Stoppers Honored

Aldermen rose to their feet Monday night to applaud people working to stop violence in New Haven.

The Board of Aldermen gave citations to members of three organizations that work against violence: Guns Down Books Up, the Bereavement Care Network, and the New Haven Family Alliance’s Street Outreach Workers.

The citations were handed out by Aldermen Angela Russell and Brian Wingate, the head of the Public Safety Committee.

Guns Down Books Up, founder Raymond Wallaces (pictured) labor of love, organizes a variety of programs and activities to give young people a positive outlet for their energies.

The Street Outreach Workers forge relationships with young people throughout the city, mediating, mentoring, and guiding them away from violence.

The Bereavement Care Network supports people who have been affected by violence.

We stand with you, behind you, in front of you, whatever it takes to support you,” Russell said.
