Whalley Walgreens Takes Another Hit

That is not the drive-thru.

One could say that the Walgreens at Whalley and Ellsworth Avenue is having a spate of bad luck. At the end of May, a tree took out its sign. On Monday, almost a month later, a car stopped short of driving through its front doors.

Police officers responded to a two-car crash that happened in front of the 436 Whalley Ave. store Monday during the thick of the afternoon rush hour at around 4 p.m.

No bystanders on the busy stretch of street were hurt. The scene did draw attention because one car was sitting with its left front bumper crumpled in the turning lane, while the other car was surrounded by crime scene tape practically parked in the entrance of the pharmacy.

Responding Police Officer Javier Montalvo said that the drivers suffered minor injuries. The crash apparently happened when the driver of the gold car was trying to make a left-hand turn out of the apartment complex across the street.

Drivers had made an opening for the driver of the gold car to make the turn. But the driver of the gold car, who was turning in the lane closest to the center of the street, apparently couldn’t see the other car coming. So they crashed. The impact spun the gold car and sent the other car into a column in the front of the store.

Montalvo said the car that crash-landed into the store actually had the right of way, and the gold car’s driver would be considered at fault.

Inspectors from the city’s building department stopped by to make sure that there was no structural damage. There wasn’t. But there was still bad news for the store: The security gate was impacted by the crash and was no longer working properly. The manager on duty said that she was just grateful that no one was hurt.
