In 1876, the White Liners,” Confederate veterans who had become vigilantes allied with the Democratic Party, murdered with impunity hundreds of African-Americans and ultimately forced the Republicans to withdraw federal troops from the South, which opened the floodgates of what became the era of Jim Crow and the Klan.
