Woman Shot Dead

A 48-year-old woman was shot dead in the Hill early Saturday.

Responding to reports of gunshots, police found the woman’s body behind 66 Second St. at 1:36 a.m. along with bullet casings in the snow. She’d been shot in the torso.

Police are investigating the possibility of a connection between a vehicle pursued by officers from the scene of the shooting to West Haven and the shooting itself,” reported police spokesman David Hartman. The car had been identified by a witness at the scene as being similar to one seen leaving the area after the shooting. New Haven police had lost sight of the vehicle during the pursuit. The suspect vehicle was later located on Gretta Street in West Haven. It had crashed. Its male operator was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he is being guarded by officers pending his being interviewed by detectives. His injuries are considered to be serious.”

Police identified the victim as Mary Townsend.
