Gun Found in Trash Can

A Fairfield Street resident saw a hoodie in his trash can — and a found a gun inside.

The police were called — and began looking into whether the gun was tied to an incident over on Valley STreet.

That is among the incidents in top Amity / Beverly Hills/ Westville / West Hills / West Rock cop Lt. Rose Dell’s latest weekly roundup, which follows:

FROM 6/9/19 to 6/15/19 POLICE RESPONDED TO 193 CALLS FOR SERVICE IN THE WESTVILLE/WEST HILLS SECTION OF NEW HAVENTHE FOLLOWING ISBRIEF SUMMARY OF NOTABLE INCIDENTS:

A resident of the 1800 block of Chapel Street reported that her Dodge Caravan was vandalized twice. Last week the rear window was smashed out. On 6/10, a light was stolen off of her trunk door.

On 6/10, police responded to the intersection of Alden Avenue and Edgewood Avenue on the anonymous report of drug sales. Police encountered two suspicious individuals. A female subject said she was visiting a friend who lives there. A male subject, whose hands were shaking, said that he wasn’t from the area but was on a walk. The male subject had two outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court and was placed under arrest.

Tuesday evening police responded to reports of shots fired on Valley Street. Residents heard sounds of paintball guns and then saw four males on the corner of Valley Street and Mountain Road. One of the males pulled a gun out of a fanny pack and fired a couple of rounds at a residence. A female was sitting in her home next to a second floor window when a bullet whizzed by and grazed her shoulder bag. The males were described as young males with black clothing. The shooter also wore a fanny pack and had glasses.

A little over an hour after shots were fired on Valley Street, police received a report that a resident of Fairfield Street found a gun in a hooded sweatshirt in his garbage can. Another call came into the dispatch center that reported a male with black, white and red track pants and no shirt was looking through the garbage. Police responded and saw a young male who fit the description provided by the caller. The male ran from the police and was apprehended a short time later. He was charged with trespass and interfering. An investigation is underway to determine who placed the firearm in the garbage and whether it was used in the incident on Valley Street.

On 6/13, police responded to Yale-New Haven Hospital for the report of a walk-in gunshot victim. The victim said he was walking on Dayton Street near the rear of CVS when a male jumped out of the bushes and tried to rob him. He was then shot and sustained two non-life threatening injuries. Detectives responded to the hospital and the scene to interview all parties and look for video surveillance.

On 6/14, a vehicle was stolen from a parking lot on Dayton Street. Video surveillance from the lot showed two males jump over the property’s fence and then attempting to open door handles of various parked vehicles. Officers then located the vehicle on Rock Creek Road. Forensics detectives lifted a print found on the vehicle.

Saturday evening police responded to a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Wilmot Road and Brookside Avenue. The collision involved two vehicles and multiple individuals were transported to the hospital, some with serious and life-threatening injuries. Both the Accident Reconstruction Team and forensics detectives responded to the scene to search for evidence.
