Wynn Drops Out

Voters in half of New Haven won’t get to choose among candidates for the Board of Education after all.

That’s because one of two Republicans nominated to run for Board of Ed seats said he has dropped out of the race.

The Republican, William F. Wynn Jr. (pictured), said he discovered he didn’t have the time required to give the attention the position deserves.”

That leaves Democrat Darnell Goldson with no opponent in District 2 on Election Day, Nov. 3.

The city created two districts to begin holding elections for two seats on the Board of Ed, which thanks to a charter change will become a hybrid” body rather than one fully appointed by the mayor.

Originally a number of Democrats planned to run in each district, meaning voters would have choices in a primary. But they all dropped out except for Goldson and Edward Joyner (District 1). With Wynn out of the race, Goldson now has an uncontested path to his seat

Joyner does have a Republican opponent in District 1 on Nov. 3, James O’Connell, who lives in Westville and teaches in Waterbury.
