Town and gown congratulated their top execs as they prepare to leave office for 20 years — along with the women who kept their offices running smoothly.

The occasion was Yale’s annual Elm-Ivy Awards,” granted to Yalies and New Haveners whom university marketing people decide should be honored for contributions made to town and gown.

This year they decided to honor Yale President Rick Levin and New Haven Mayor John DeStefano. Both came into office roughly at the same time. Both are leaving roughly at the same time after two decades of developing both a warm and productive personal working relationship — and therefore a dramatically improved relationship between city government and the city’s largest employer.

Elm-Ivy awards went as well to Regina Starolis, who has behind the scenes kept Levin’s office running all that time; and City Hall counterpart Rosemarie Lemley, who, in the words of Yale’s press release, has since 1996 been the calm amidst any and all storms as the executive assistant to the mayor.”
