Yale Union Dues Rise

Citing fears for the future of medical-related jobs, Yale’s clerical and technical workers union voted to approve a 14-cent-an hour increase in dues.

Some 77 percent of over 2,000 members voting by secret ballot Wednesday evening approved the change, in the form of a bylaws amendment, according to the union, Local 34 UNITE HERE.

A Local 34 press release cited the expansion of Yale-New Haven Hospital as a motivating factor, noting the layoffs that took place when a unionized sleep center closed and Yale-New Haven announced plans to open a new version of it, without unionized jobs. Read more about that here and here. The union has 986 members working in clerical areas.

Full-time Local 34 members will now pay three times their hourly salary in monthly dues, up from 2.25 percent. Part-timers will pay 2.4 times, up from 1.8 times.

The members also reelected Local 34 President Laurie Kennington (pictured).
