“I know the number looks large,” Toad’s Place owner Brian Phelps said of the 87 underage customers found drinking at his nightclub Saturday night. “But we had a lot of people in here.” It was “College Night.” More than 500 customers showed up. State liquor control agents raided the joint and said they found the 87 minors purchasing the devil’s brew. That’s a high number for a nightclub raid around here, and Toad’s is under pressure as the investigation continues. Phelps said Toad’s does all it can to weed out kids with fake IDs. A doorman checks IDs. Staff scan the IDs and photograph the customers. If they’re suspicious, they have customers fill out forms stating they’re over 21. Phelps added that he takes extra steps to prevent drunk driving. Saturday night, for instance, he sent a “yellow bus” to the junior and senior dorms to transport students to the Toad’s dance party, so they wouldn’t have to drive home.
