Cool Events This Weekend, Here & Beyond

by Sally E. Bahner | Jan 19, 2018 9:17 am

The winter chill continues, but there are plenty of activities to warm the heart. For those missing the fruits (and veggies) of summer, there’s a farmers market. Activists can take part in the Women’s Marches in Hartford and in New York City. And there are cool events for book lovers, would-be artists, film buffs, and music lovers, and much more. Got a cool event? Email sebahner@snet.net by Wednesday noon.

Through March 31

Branford Fire DepartmentA specially designed feline oxygen mask was instrumental in saving the life of a cat caught up in a house fire this week.

Firefighters responded to a heavy fire at 19 Leetes Island Road, Paved Lane Trailer Park, on Tuesday afternoon after the occupant called 911 to report a fire coming from behind the furnace. The occupants were trying to save their three cats but had to leave the house due to heavy smoke.

New Veterinary Facility Pays Homage to Old Roots

by Sally E. Bahner | Dec 6, 2017 9:05 am

Sally E. Bahner PhotoIt’s fitting that an 80-year-old veterinary practice built on caring for farm animals is reinventing itself on the site of a well-known Branford farm.

Sally E. Bahner PhotoBranford Veterinary Hospital, the oldest veterinary practice in Branford, will soon relocate to a new facility in a former cornfield adjacent to the former Bahnsen farm on Route 139. Site work is now underway and a July 2018 opening is expected.

Tree Lighting Parade Brings Out Huge Crowd

by Bill O'Brien | Nov 29, 2017 7:12 am

Bill O'Brien PhotoIt couldn’t have been a better night. On Saturday, the 19th Annual Branford Tree Lighting Parade stepped off from Branford High School and headed to the Town Green with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus on a vintage fire truck to light the town’s Christmas tree.

Bill O'Brien PhotoThe temperature was in the low 50s and that had a lot to do with the several thousand residents and friends that were lined up to 6-to-10 deep on sections along Main Street. They had waited for this moment. Especially the kids.

Cool Events This Weekend, Here & Beyond

by Sally E. Bahner | Nov 17, 2017 9:16 am

BLT PhotoYes, Thanksgiving is arriving and the signs of Christmas are evident. Do take some time and enjoy these fall moments – the colors are still vibrant – before the Christmas crush. Put on your walking shoes and join the Branford Land Trust for its annual pre-Thanksgiving walk in the woods.  In this season of giving, there are plenty of good causes to support – the Community Dining Room, the Counseling Center, Branford Compassion Club, Feed Branford Kids, Toys for Tots, the Ben Callahan Memorial Fund, and more. Pick your favorite and lend your support. Got a cool event? Email sebahner@snet.net by Wednesday noon.

And don’t forget to give a “Give A Cop The Bird” this weekend. Then, take a deep breath and prepare for the next round of holiday activities.

All Creatures Great and Small Are Blessed

by Sally E. Bahner & Mary Johnson | Oct 4, 2017 6:12 am

Mary Johnson PhotoThe animals were aware indeed on Sunday at the Branford Compassion Club’s Animal Awareness Day. The green was alive with critters of all kind – dogs and cats, of course, along with mini horses, goats, guinea pigs, and even turtles. Overall, the animals were quiet, standing in line, awaiting their turn.

Mary Johnson PhotoThe beautiful day drew hundreds, as the green was shared by the Friends of the Blackstone Library, which was holding its annual book sale, and the Trinity Church Fair.

Cool Events This Weekend, Here & Beyond

File PhotoExplore someplace new this weekend. On Saturday, the North Branford Women’s Club is hosting a hike around Lake Gaillard, a treasure tucked away in North Branford. The public is seldom allowed into this property owned by the Regional Water Authority, so here is a unique opportunity. As always, the Branford Green is the place to be this weekend, with the Friends of Library Book Sale (you can never have too many books), the Trinity Church Fair, and Animal Awareness Day, highlighted by the Blessing of the Animals. What better way to honor our beloved pets?

Fall has officially arrived, but the warmth of summer is lingering. Tag sales, book sales, bike tourneys, and artwork for all tastes can all be found within the borders of our town. If the activist in you has been raised, check out Connecticut Shoreline Indivisible’s fall kick-off meeting with Rosa DeLauro (and be sure that you are registered to vote regardless of your political leanings). Looking ahead, round up your pups and kitties for Branford Compassion Club’s Animal Awareness Day with the Blessing of the Animals as its highlight. Need more ideas for activities? Read on!

Storm Prep: Just in Case

by Sally E. Bahner | Sep 18, 2017 7:34 am

Sally E. Bahner photoAhead of Hurricane Harvey, and subsequently Hurricane Irma, (and now there’s Jose and maybe Maria), I mentally checked off what I needed to do to evacuate with my two cats. Much of their stuff is in the family room, so that’s where I started.

Two large carriers with comfy blankets at the ready. Check.
