All Creatures Great and Small Are Blessed

by Sally E. Bahner & Mary Johnson | Oct 4, 2017 7:12 am

Mary Johnson Photo The animals were aware indeed on Sunday at the Branford Compassion Club’s Animal Awareness Day. The green was alive with critters of all kind – dogs and cats, of course, along with mini horses, goats, guinea pigs, and even turtles. Overall, the animals were quiet, standing in line, awaiting their turn.

Mary Johnson Photo The beautiful day drew hundreds, as the green was shared by the Friends of the Blackstone Library, which was holding its annual book sale, and the Trinity Church Fair.

File Photo Explore someplace new this weekend. On Saturday, the North Branford Women’s Club is hosting a hike around Lake Gaillard, a treasure tucked away in North Branford. The public is seldom allowed into this property owned by the Regional Water Authority, so here is a unique opportunity. As always, the Branford Green is the place to be this weekend, with the Friends of Library Book Sale (you can never have too many books), the Trinity Church Fair, and Animal Awareness Day, highlighted by the Blessing of the Animals. What better way to honor our beloved pets?

Fall has officially arrived, but the warmth of summer is lingering. Tag sales, book sales, bike tourneys, and artwork for all tastes can all be found within the borders of our town. If the activist in you has been raised, check out Connecticut Shoreline Indivisible’s fall kick-off meeting with Rosa DeLauro (and be sure that you are registered to vote regardless of your political leanings). Looking ahead, round up your pups and kitties for Branford Compassion Club’s Animal Awareness Day with the Blessing of the Animals as its highlight. Need more ideas for activities? Read on!

Storm Prep: Just in Case

by Sally E. Bahner | Sep 18, 2017 8:34 am

Sally E. Bahner photo Ahead of Hurricane Harvey, and subsequently Hurricane Irma, (and now there’s Jose and maybe Maria), I mentally checked off what I needed to do to evacuate with my two cats. Much of their stuff is in the family room, so that’s where I started.

Two large carriers with comfy blankets at the ready. Check.

A big weekend along the shoreline! The Guilford Fair, a perennial favorite, kicks off the agricultural fair season. Every area of the state has its signature events, featuring midways, entertainment, baking contests, horse and oxen pulls, rides, and, of course, food. Kids with guitars (and drums and more) can strut their stuff on the green tonight and aim for stardom, while plant lovers and families stake their claim on Saturday and Sunday. Paddle your canoe (or kayak) along the Branford River and get a glimpse of Broadway as well. Read on! There’s more.

If all else fails, there’s music! The Branford Jazz Series entertained us throughout the summer and now it’s time for the long-standing Branford Folk Music Society to begin its season. The music continues with the sixth annual Young Musicians’ Showcase where kids can try out their talents. In addition, there are plenty of chances to get out and enjoy the beautiful late summer weather along the Branford River, enrich your mind, and pick up some bargains at the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale and Short Beach Union Church Tag Sale. Need help sleeping? There’s a discussion on that, too!

Kids head back to school on Monday and the yellow buses have already been seen lumbering down local roads on their dry runs. Did you walk, take the bus, or get driven to school? The Blackstone Library, as always, is hosting a diverse collection of programs, from sleep to birds and board games to book clubs. We’re heading into fair season with the Guilford Fair leading the list since 1859 – you can’t top that for getting back to one’s roots. Speaking of roots, everyone is Italian this weekend at St. George Men’s Group’s Italianfest at St. George Church in Guilford. Grape stomping anyone?

This weekend is jam packed with Cool Events! When was the last time Branford hosted a carnival? You may hearken back to the days at Hammer Field – who remembers when that was last held? But perhaps a new carnival tradition is being established via the First Annual Tabor Carnival, which has all the makings of the summer institution we love. Speaking of memories, those who loved the drive-in theaters of their youth can at least grab the family and a blanket and head for Foote Park. Also, check out the sales, arts events, car show, and much more. If you haven’t experienced jazz on the green, Thursday is your last chance. Got a Cool Event? When it comes to summer, there’s nothing better than fresh corn. Corn (and potatoes) will be king at the Potato and Corn Festival this weekend in Northford. The family event opens tonight and runs through Sunday. Art and music are on the agenda in the upcoming week and, looking ahead, Cosgrove Shelter’s annual Woofstock Music Festival proves that dogs are indeed our best friends. The Shoreline Wine Festival features fruits of the vine from Connecticut Vineyards. Raise a glass to our bountiful state!
