Cool Events This Weekend, Here & Beyond

by Sally E. Bahner | Aug 18, 2017 11:00 am

This weekend is jam packed with Cool Events! When was the last time Branford hosted a carnival? You may hearken back to the days at Hammer Field – who remembers when that was last held? But perhaps a new carnival tradition is being established via the First Annual Tabor Carnival, which has all the makings of the summer institution we love. Speaking of memories, those who loved the drive-in theaters of their youth can at least grab the family and a blanket and head for Foote Park. Also, check out the sales, arts events, car show, and much more. If you haven’t experienced jazz on the green, Thursday is your last chance. Got a Cool Event? Email by Wednesday noon.

When it comes to summer, there’s nothing better than fresh corn. Corn (and potatoes) will be king at the Potato and Corn Festival this weekend in Northford. The family event opens tonight and runs through Sunday. Art and music are on the agenda in the upcoming week and, looking ahead, Cosgrove Shelter’s annual Woofstock Music Festival proves that dogs are indeed our best friends. The Shoreline Wine Festival features fruits of the vine from Connecticut Vineyards. Raise a glass to our bountiful state!

Branford Compassion Club Turns 20!

by Sally E. Bahner | Jun 12, 2017 9:20 am

Sally E. Bahner Photo Twenty years after its founding by Eunice Lasala, Friskie Wheeler, and Ann Marie Lorello, the Branford Compassion Club has grown from a group of dedicated volunteers feeding feral colonies to a full service brick and mortar adoption facility.

That facility, officially the Branford Compassion Club Feline Rescue and Adoption Center, now has a full-time shelter manager, Pat Cotton, who oversees the daily care and vetting of all the felines who set paws through the doors. Since opening more than six years ago, close to 1,500 felines have found their forever homes, and approximately 2,000 total since 2008. Cotton is backed up by a team of 50 to 60 volunteers who cover all shifts within the shelter. Another 30 or so help with non-shelter related work such as publicity and fundraising.

The dog walker must also bring the dog’s current rabies vaccination certificate (from your veterinarian) and cash or a check to pay for your new license tag. On-time licensing ends on Friday, June 30. A $1 per month late fee begins to accrue on July 1.
