Reunion & Yale Jazz Ensembles Play For New Haven

Reunion Jazz Ensemble is readying another reunion this weekend, as part of an annual jazz celebration in the Elm City. The ensemble will join the Yale Jazz Ensemble for a great afternoon of jazz at the Yale Law School.

The event is the 2015 Stan Wheeler Memorial Jazz Concert, named after a stalwart of the ensemble as well as a pioneering legal thinker and researcher. It begins at 2 p.m. in the law school’s Levinson Auditorium at 127 Wall St. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.

The Yale Jazz Ensemble, a stalwart in this concert, will play the Peer Gynt Suite, arranged by Duke Ellington and Bill Strayhorn and a West Side Story Medley by Leonard Bernstein, arranged by Buddy Rich. Music Director Thomas C. Duffy, who is on the faculty of the music school, will lead the jazz ensemble. Many of Reunion’s players were original members of the Yale Jazz Ensemble back in the late 1970’s. They are seen here at last year’s concert.

The Reunion Jazz Ensemble — made up of a group of longtime friends who include Grammy Award winners, Broadway veterans, top Hollywood arrangers, and musicians who have performed around the world – were featured at the Branford Jazz On The Green Series in 2013.

Reunion’s lineup for this Sunday’s jazz concert include original members Steve Perrett (trumpet), Paul Lieberman (tenor sax, flute), Paul Sullivan (piano), and Jeff Fuller (bass). Joining them will be well known local jazz luminaries Tim Moran(alto sax), Gary Bennett (baritone sax), Tony Lombardozzi (guitar) and Bob D’Angelo, (drums). Click here to read about Jeff Fuller’s recent release, The Call From Within — a lengthy exposition in the time-honored piano trio format. It’s his first album of all original compositions.
