It was an emotional day at the high school baseball field Saturday as family and friends gathered to dedicate the field to the late George Dummar, Jr., the former baseball coach who led the Branford Hornets to win two state championships during his tenure as coach from 2004 – 2012.
Dummar, who was 54, died last September of a brain tumor that he had battled for several years. His record while at Branford was 138 – 75. He won eight divisional titles and the two state titles in 2006 and 2009.
Michael Krause (pictured), chairman of the Board of Education, thanked those in the audience “for being here for George and his family.”
Schools Superintendent Hamlet Hernandez welcomed everyone to this special event.
George’s wife Patty, their sons George Jr. and Nick, his mother Barbara, brother Tom and sister Denise along with George Capone, Patty’s father, all sat next to the podium during the brief program. The members of this year’s baseball team stood behind the family.
Others in attendance included a number of past players, friends, and family of the current Branford team. A respectful gesture was the visiting Shelton Gaels team also stood on the field for the program.
Eight members of the Greater New Haven Baseball Umpires Association were also there in respect for Dummar.
In addition to Krause, Superintendant of Schools Hamlet Hernandez and George Dummar III spoke. The young Dummar thanked everyone for their support since his father became ill. A note from former Branford player, and current member of the Chicago Cubs, Mike Olt, was read.
George’s son Nick threw out the first pitch.
A group from the BHS Music Makers sang the National Anthem over the loud speakers inside the press box. And then the game between Branford and Shelton started.
George’s old friend Henry Bromley was there in his usual front row seat.
