Branford Book and Card: Retirement on the Horizon

It’s no secret that the town’s go-to source for newspapers, magazines, books, and lottery tickets for 40 years has been for sale.

Branford Book and Card Shoppe’s owner, Bob Esposito, wants to retire, the first chance I get.” A large sign in the window announces a retirement sale.

Esposito and his wife, Maria, own the long corner building, which includes the Key Bank, P.S. Fine Stationers, and apartments above. The entire property, located at 1020 – 28 Main St., is appraised at $1.7 million and was built in 1956, according to town records.

The book and card store, on the green at the corner of Main Street and Park Place, has been on the market for three years and although several potential buyers have expressed interest, a sale is not imminent. Click here to read our prior story.

Indeed, a store such as Branford Book and Card requires a commitment that is not for the faint of heart. It’s a hands-on operation. Esposito, his sister Roseann Baroncini, and his son, Sal, are on the premises seven days a week. The line at the counter is continuous from early morning to early evening.

Sal Esposito also owns P.S. Fine Stationers. Bob says he will have a say in the future of the store. Sal, however, is mum. You’ll find out soon enough,” he says.

In the meantime, Esposito is looking to reduce inventory and says he will stay open as long as it holds up, at least through Christmas. He encourages everyone to stop by.

And, with the holiday season approaching, why not shop local? All of their books – hardcovers and paperbacks – are 50 percent off and the shelves are already starting to thin out. Plus, you’re sure to find some additional good buys on gift items, knick knacks, holiday items and much more.
