Branford Voter Registration Up by 10 Percent; Online Deadline Nov. 1

With Permission

We always see an increase in voter registration during the Presidential election, even though municipal elections are important,” said Republican Registrar of Voters Marion Burkard less than two weeks before this year’s election.

The online, by mail or in-person deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 8 presidential election is this Monday, Nov. 1. This is the first presidential election year in which online registration is available.

To use the online voter registration system you must have a current and valid driver’s license, learner’s permit or non-driver photo identification card issued by the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and a signature on file with DMV.

Register online here.

In person Election Day Registration takes place at Branford Town Hall, 1019 Main St. from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Please follow signs for Voter Entrance. Election Day I.D. requirements: a current driver’s license or a copy of a current and valid photo I.D. or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, or paycheck that shows your name and address.

Burkard said people also can register at the Registrar of Voters office, 40 Kirkham St., as late as Nov. 7 if they’ve just moved into town, turn 18, are with the military, or have become a citizen.

Secretary of State Denise W. Merrill is urging everyone still unregistered to get engaged.” She said Election Day registration is in effect on Nov. 8 though lines are expected to be long. So far the state has 2 million registered voters, Merrill said.

Absentee ballots may be obtained at the town clerk’s office or you may print a form from the Registrar of Voters website.

Branford Voter Data is Up!

As of Wednesday, Oct. 26, the number of registered voters in Branford stood at 19,592. That’s just about a 10 percent increase over last year’s 17,830 (as of Nov. 12, 2015).

Affiliations are distributed as follows: Democrats – 6,757 (a 13 percent increase from last year’s 5882); Republicans – 3,553 (a 19 percent increase over last year’s 2,878); Unaffiliated – 9,137 (a 2 percent increase over last year’s 8,983); and other parties (Working Families, Green, Libertarian) – 145 (a 6 percent increase over last year’s 87).

Burkard noted that these were mostly new registrations or changes due to relocation or name changes. She added that changes in party affiliation usually take place during primaries.

The ballots include a section for write-in candidates. Burkard said that write-in candidates must be registered within the state; otherwise they will not be counted.
